1. Why Night Vision is Non-Negotiable in India

India has frequent power cuts, poorly lit streets, and a majority of property crimes happen after dark. A CCTV camera that produces black or blurry footage at night is essentially useless for evidence or deterrence. Every outdoor camera you install must have reliable night vision.

The good news: modern night vision cameras are affordable and effective. Even a ₹1,200 camera today can produce clear footage at 20 metres in complete darkness — something that required ₹15,000+ equipment just 7 years ago.

2. How IR Night Vision Works

Standard CCTV cameras use Infrared (IR) LEDs built into the camera housing. These LEDs emit infrared light invisible to the human eye but detectable by the camera sensor. When the camera detects low light (via an automatic IR cut filter), it switches to night mode and the IR LEDs activate.

The result is a black-and-white image that can be clear and detailed even in complete darkness. The number and power of IR LEDs determines the range — more LEDs = longer range.

3. IR Night Vision vs Colour Night Vision

IR Night Vision (B&W): Works in complete darkness. Less expensive. Industry standard for most home and office use. Shows faces and movement clearly but no colour information.
Colour Night Vision: Requires some ambient light (street light, moonlight). Shows full colour even at night — useful for identifying clothing colour, vehicle colour. Uses Sony Starvis or similar large sensor technology. Costs 40–80% more.

For most Indian installations, IR night vision is sufficient. Choose colour night vision for commercial areas with some ambient lighting where colour detail is important (e.g., identifying clothing in a theft incident).

4. Night Vision Range Guide

  • 15–20 metres: Entry-level home cameras. Good for narrow driveways, corridors.
  • 30 metres: Standard for most home gates and outdoor areas.
  • 40–50 metres: Large compounds, parking lots, factory perimeters.
  • 60–100 metres: Industrial sites, highways. Requires high-power IR LEDs.

Note: Manufacturer-claimed ranges are often optimistic. A camera claiming 30m typically gives clear footage at 20–22m. Add 30% buffer when planning.

5. Common Night Vision Problems

  • IR reflection from white walls: Camera too close to wall causes IR to reflect back and wash out image. Keep cameras at least 1.5m from walls.
  • Spider webs trigger IR: Spiders love warm IR LEDs. Clean cameras monthly.
  • Dirty dome cover: Dust on dome housing diffuses IR light, reducing range dramatically. Clean monthly.
  • IR cut filter stuck: Camera stuck in night mode during day (or vice versa). Needs replacement.
