Key takeaways

  • Ask your developer for batch and expiry tracking, because food delivered online must still have enough shelf life left.
  • Each product needs structured fields for the package declarations, label statements and importer details, not just a description box.
  • Imported products need importer details now, and a country-of-origin filter is due under a 2026 Legal Metrology amendment.
  • Delivery slots, store pickup and cash on delivery suit buyers who work shifts at Bawal and Dharuhera.

What makes Rewari different for an online nutrition store?

Rewari combines a district town with large industrial belts nearby, so your buyers keep different hours and expect flexible delivery. A developer should know this before planning checkout and delivery features.

IMT Bawal, developed by HSIIDC, sits on the national highway about 11 km from Rewari and about 50 km from Gurgaon. Rewari is also linked to Dharuhera and Sohna by NH 919, to Jhajjar and Rohtak by NH 352 and to Pataudi and Gurgaon by NH 352W. AIIMS Rewari, the first AIIMS in Haryana, is being developed at Majra–Bhalakhi in the district.

For your location page, landmarks people know help: the Rewari Railway Heritage Museum, a former steam locomotive shed about 400 metres north of the railway station, is one example. Gym members, factory staff on rotating shifts and families buying health foods are all part of the demand.

For the website, this means:

  • Orders arrive at odd hours, so the store must take orders and confirm them automatically, even when the shop is closed.
  • Delivery addresses vary, from homes in town to rooms near the industrial areas, so address forms need landmarks.
  • Payment habits differ, so UPI, cards and cash on delivery should all be available.

What should you ask a developer before you start?

Ask how the site will hold food-product data, track stock by batch and expiry, take payments and handle complaints. A developer who has only built clothing stores may not think of these.

  1. Will each product have separate fields for manufacturer or importer, country of origin, net quantity, MRP, best-before and consumer care?
  2. Can stock be tracked by batch and expiry, with the oldest safe batch sent first?
  3. Can the site block an order if no batch has enough shelf life left?
  4. Which payments are included: UPI, cards, cash on delivery? Which gateway?
  5. Will invoices show GST correctly and print batch numbers?
  6. How are delivery zones, slots and pickup set up, and who can change them?
  7. How are complaints logged, numbered and tracked?
  8. Who updates plugins or code, and how are backups handled?

Also agree in writing who owns the domain, the hosting account, the code and the customer data. If you change developers later, you should be able to take the store with you without rebuilding it.

Our e-commerce website checklist for India covers the general store features; the rest of this post covers what is specific to food and supplements.

How should the site track batch numbers and expiry?

Record batch and expiry when stock arrives, and let the system pick which batch to send. FSSAI's e-commerce rules say any food article delivered to a consumer must have 30 percent of its shelf life or 45 days left before expiry at delivery, and the December 2024 advisory repeats it.

  • Goods-in screen: staff enter batch, manufacturing month and expiry for each delivery from the distributor.
  • First-expiry-first-out: orders are allocated to the batch that expires first but still meets the shelf-life rule.
  • Alerts: a weekly list of batches nearing the cut-off, so you can move them in the shop instead.
  • Invoice: batch number printed, which helps with complaints and any recall from the brand.

If a brand recalls a batch, the same records show which customers received it, so you can contact them quickly. Without batch data, you would have to guess from dates and memory.

Which data fields does each product listing need?

Build structured fields that match what the law asks to be declared and what the label must say. Structured data also makes Google product listings easier later.

FieldWhere the requirement comes fromHow the site shows it
Manufacturer, packer or importer name and addressLegal Metrology declarationsText block under the price
Country of originLegal Metrology declarationsText, plus a filter for imported items

The declaration list follows the Department of Consumer Affairs summary of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules; the label statements come from FSSAI's Nutraceutical Regulations, 2022. This is a planning aid, not legal advice.

Keep product descriptions inside the same limits. The Nutraceutical Regulations bar claims to treat, cure, mitigate or prevent any disease unless permitted, and FSSAI's 2024 advisory says online claims must match the physical label. Ask your developer to keep the description field short and to place label wording, not marketing copy, at the top.

How do you sell imported supplements correctly?

Name the importer, show the country of origin and buy only through authorised channels. The Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 require an e-commerce entity that offers imported goods to mention the name and details of the importer it bought from.

A Legal Metrology amendment notified on 27 April 2026 (G.S.R. 312(E)) requires e-commerce entities offering imported products to give those listings a searchable and sortable country-of-origin filter from 1 July 2027. Build the field now so the filter is a small change later.

  • Show the importer's name and address from the pack, not just the brand.
  • Keep purchase invoices from the brand or its authorised distributor.
  • If the brand offers a code or QR to check authenticity, tell buyers where to verify it on the brand's own site.
  • Be careful with 100% genuine badges: the E-Commerce Rules say an inventory seller that vouches for authenticity bears liability for it.

How do delivery and payments work for Bawal and Dharuhera shift workers?

Offer delivery slots that fit shifts, store pickup in Rewari and both cash on delivery and UPI. A worker finishing a night shift may want an evening drop at home or a pickup on the way back.

  • Separate zones for Rewari town, Bawal and Dharuhera, each with its own cut-off time.
  • A pickup option with a ready-for-collection message on WhatsApp.
  • Order confirmation and dispatch updates by WhatsApp or SMS.
  • A clear total with delivery charges shown separately, as the E-Commerce Rules expect.

The same rules expect clear return, refund, exchange and delivery terms, a grievance officer whose name and contact are on the site, acknowledgement of complaints within 48 hours and resolution within one month, and a ticket number so buyers can track a complaint. Build these pages and the complaint log before launch, not after the first dispute.

How will Rewari customers find the store online?

Combine a Google Business Profile, delivery-area pages and clean product data. Google's Business Profile guidelines let a staffed storefront also set a service area for deliveries. Merchant Center free listings can show products on Search, Maps and the Shopping tab once you add return policy and shipping details. Write separate, genuinely useful pages for Bawal and Dharuhera, with real delivery times, rather than copies with the town name swapped.

  • Put your full address, a map and opening hours on the contact page.
  • Mention a landmark near the shop so first-time visitors can find it.
  • Add product structured data so price and availability are read correctly.
  • Ask buyers for honest reviews after delivery; never post reviews yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need batch and expiry tracking on a small nutrition store website?

It helps a lot. FSSAI requires food delivered to consumers to have at least 30 percent or 45 days of shelf life left. Tracking batches and expiry when stock arrives lets the site send the right batch automatically, warn you about stock nearing the limit and print batch numbers on invoices for complaints.

What should a developer build for imported supplements?

Add fields for the importer's name and address and the country of origin on every imported product, and show them on the product page. A 2026 Legal Metrology amendment requires e-commerce entities offering imported products to provide a searchable, sortable country-of-origin filter from 1 July 2027, so planning the field early saves rework.

Can my Rewari store offer cash on delivery to Bawal?

Yes. Most store platforms and gateways support cash on delivery alongside UPI and cards. Set Bawal and Dharuhera as separate delivery zones with their own cut-off times, and confirm orders on WhatsApp before dispatch to cut down on refused deliveries from buyers whose shift timings changed.

Is it safe to put a 100% genuine badge on my site?

Only if you can stand behind it. The Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 say an inventory e-commerce entity that vouches for the authenticity of goods bears liability for it. Buy through authorised distributors, keep invoices and show importer details. This is general information, not legal advice.

How long does it take to build a nutrition store website?

It depends on the number of products, how much label data you need to enter, payment and delivery setup, and whether stock links to your billing software. A catalogue site is quicker than a full store with batch tracking. Ask your developer for a written scope and a staged plan before work starts.
