Key takeaways

  • A builder suits a small play school or coaching centre with few updates; a custom site suits schools with several campuses, ERP links and heavy admission traffic.
  • Any platform can host CBSE's Appendix IX disclosure; the real test is how easily staff keep it current.
  • Delhi NCR families cross city and state lines to reach schools, so route and area pages often matter more than design templates.
  • If you move from a builder to a custom site, keep your URLs or redirect them, and keep the domain in the school's name.

What is the difference between a website builder and a custom school website?

A website builder gives you ready templates and hosting in one account; a custom website is planned and built around your school's own pages, data and workflow. Schools across Delhi NCR use both, and both can work if they match the school's size and how often it updates information.

There is a middle path too. WordPress is open source software licensed under the GPLv2 or later, so a school can start from a theme and add plugins, or have a developer build a custom theme on top of it. Hosted builders such as Google Sites and Wix keep everything inside the provider's platform. A fully custom build is coded for the school, often with a content system made for notices, results and disclosure documents.

None of these is "right" in general. The useful question is: who will update the site every week, what must it connect to, and how many parents will use it in admission season?

How do Google Sites, Wix, WordPress and a custom build compare for schools?

Builders win on speed of setup and simplicity; custom builds win on structure, integrations and control. WordPress sits in between, depending on how it is set up and maintained.

Google Sites can use your own domain: Google's help page says only the site owner can connect a domain, ownership is verified through Search Console with a DNS record, up to five custom domains can point to one site, and the site must be shared publicly or visitors are redirected to the sites.google.com address.

Can a builder website meet CBSE mandatory disclosure rules?

Yes. CBSE asks for the information and its prominent placement, not for a particular technology. Clause 2.4.9 of the Affiliation Bye-Laws, as amended by CBSE Circular 03 of 2021, says the Mandatory Public Disclosure in the Appendix IX format shall be uploaded at a prominent place on the school website.

The Appendix IX format covers general information, eight types of documents, fees, the academic calendar, SMC and PTA lists, three years of Class X and XII results, teaching staff details and infrastructure, including a YouTube link to an inspection video. Documents must be self-attested by the management and the Principal.

On a builder, this is usually one long page with a hand-made table and linked PDFs. That is fine if one careful person owns it. It becomes risky when several staff edit it, figures go out of date, or old PDFs stay linked. A custom section with named fields and upload slots for each Appendix IX item makes the same job harder to get wrong.

Why do Delhi NCR schools often need more than a template?

Because NCR families travel across city and state borders to reach a school, and they search by area. A template home page rarely answers "do you run a bus from our side of town?"

Travel links keep pulling catchments across borders. The Dwarka Expressway now connects Dwarka in Delhi with Gurugram and passes Sectors 102 to 113. In Faridabad, the Delhi Metro's Violet Line reaches Ballabhgarh, which also connects the town with south-east Delhi. A school near either corridor may draw families from Delhi and Haryana at once, and those families search for things like "school near Dwarka Expressway" or "school in Ballabhgarh with bus".

Boards differ across the region too. A school in Faridabad may follow the Haryana Board, whose official site bseh.org.in is run from Bhiwani, while a school across the border may be CBSE. Your site should say clearly which board you follow and link to the right results and circulars. That is easier on a site with planned area, transport and board pages than on a single scrolling template.

When is a website builder the right choice for a school?

A builder is the right choice when the school is small, updates are rare and one person can own the site. It gets you online quickly with little effort.

  • a new play school or day care that needs a few pages, photos, a map and a WhatsApp button;
  • a coaching institute with one centre and a fixed batch timetable;
  • a school that needs a temporary site while a larger build is planned;
  • a school with no ERP yet and admission enquiries handled by phone.

If you go this way, use the builder well. Pick a plain template that reads easily on a phone, add the school's full address and a map on every page footer, put the admission enquiry button at the top, and keep a simple monthly routine: remove expired notices, refresh dates and check that every document link still opens. A well-kept small site does more for parents than a large one nobody updates.

Even on a free builder, register the domain in the school's or trust's name. The domain is what parents, Google and your printed material remember.

When should a Delhi NCR school choose a custom website?

Choose custom when the website has to work as part of the school's system, not as a standalone brochure. These signs usually tip the decision:

  1. Several campuses or branches in Delhi NCR, each with its own address, routes and admissions contact.
  2. ERP integration: enquiries must reach the School ERP, and the parent login must open the ERP app.
  3. Heavy admission traffic: forms, visit bookings and campus pages must stay fast when many parents arrive at once.
  4. Proper Hindi and English versions with their own URLs, linked by hreflang.
  5. Data control: the DPDP Rules 2025 require verifiable consent before processing a child's data, with limited exemptions such as education and safety, so you may want consent records stored in your own systems. This is general information, not legal advice.
  6. Accessibility: text contrast of at least 4.5:1, as the W3C contrast guideline asks, is easier to enforce across a custom design than across mixed templates.

How do you move from a builder to a custom site without losing visibility?

Keep the domain, map every old URL to its new page and tell Google about the change. Most lost traffic after a rebuild comes from broken links, not from the new design.

  1. List every page on the old site, especially Admissions, Disclosure, Results and Contact.
  2. Keep the same URLs where you can; set 301 redirects for any that change.
  3. Move all disclosure documents and check each PDF link on a phone.
  4. Verify the new site in Google Search Console and submit the sitemap.
  5. Update the website link on your Google Business Profile and social pages.
  6. Watch enquiry numbers for the first weeks and fix any form or redirect problems quickly.

Plan the switch outside peak admission weeks if you can. For the wider trade-offs, see our comparison of WordPress vs a custom website.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Google Sites good enough for a school website?

For a small play school or a temporary site, it can be. Google Sites is simple, can use your own domain after verification in Search Console, and needs little upkeep. It becomes limiting when you need structured CBSE disclosure, notice archives, ERP-connected enquiry forms, separate Hindi and English URLs or several campuses, which is when a custom build makes more sense.

Can a WordPress school website be a custom website?

Yes. WordPress is open-source software, so a developer can build a theme and content fields made for your school, such as disclosure sections and notice archives. The difference from a theme-and-plugins setup is planning: a custom WordPress build is designed around your workflow, and it still needs regular updates and security patches to stay safe.

Does CBSE require a particular website platform?

No. CBSE's clause 2.4.9, as amended in 2021, requires affiliated schools to maintain a website with key information and to upload the Appendix IX Mandatory Public Disclosure at a prominent place. Any platform can do that. The practical difference is how easily your staff can keep the figures and self-attested documents correct over time.

How do Delhi NCR schools target parents from other cities?

Build pages around real routes and areas you serve, such as sectors along the Dwarka Expressway or Ballabhgarh, with pick-up points, timings and admission details. Keep one consistent address on the website and Google Business Profile, state your board clearly, and avoid thin pages that only swap place names, as they help nobody.

Will moving from a builder to a custom site hurt our Google visibility?

It should not if the move is planned. Keep the same domain, keep URLs where possible, set 301 redirects for pages that change, move every disclosure document, verify the new site in Search Console and update your Google Business Profile link. Most problems after a rebuild come from broken links and missing pages, not the new platform.
