Key takeaways
- A restriction (“Your account is restricted right now”) ends automatically; you can still chat with existing contacts but can’t start chats with new ones.
- A ban (“This phone number can’t use WhatsApp”) is reviewed only through the Request review button in the app; if that button is missing, WhatsApp says the ban is final.
- WhatsApp names bulk or automated messaging, messages people didn’t ask for, repeated blocks and reports, and unofficial apps as causes.
- Prevention is the only reliable fix: opt-in, saved contacts, the official app, an honest profile and respecting every “stop” request.
What is the difference between a restricted and a banned WhatsApp Business account?
A restriction is temporary: for a set period you can’t start chats or calls with new contacts, and it ends on its own. A ban means the number can’t use WhatsApp at all; the official path is to tap Request review in the app. Nobody outside WhatsApp can lift either one.
WhatsApp’s Help Center describes the two states:
- Restricted: the app shows “Your account is restricted right now” or “Your account may be restricted soon”. You can keep chatting with contacts and groups you have chatted or called before, but you can’t start chats or calls with new contacts, create groups, add members to groups or use linked devices. No action is needed; the restriction ends when its time runs out and WhatsApp sends a notification.
- Banned: the app shows “This phone number can’t use WhatsApp: [phone number]. You can request a review of this number. Most reviews are completed within 24 hours.” You can’t open chats or backups until the number is unbanned.
Searching “WhatsApp Business restricted for 24 hours”? WhatsApp does not publish a fixed length for account restrictions. To see the time left, tap New Chat and pick a contact you have never chatted with; the pop-up shows the remaining time.
What does each WhatsApp message mean, and what should you do?
Read the exact wording on screen first; each message has a different official next step.
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| “Your account may be restricted soon” | A warning: recent activity looks like spam, automated or bulk messaging | Stop sending unsolicited or bulk messages now and message only people who contacted you or asked to hear from you |
| “Your account is restricted right now” | Temporary restriction: existing chats work, new chats, new groups and linked devices don’t | Wait it out; it ends automatically. Check the time left via New Chat and reply to existing customers meanwhile |
| “This phone number can’t use WhatsApp… You can request a review” | The number is banned, but the ban can be reviewed | Tap Request review once and check the status by opening the app |
| The ban message with no Request review option | The ban is final and can’t be appealed | Read the Terms; don’t create another business account without WhatsApp’s written permission |
| “Temporarily banned” | Linked to an unofficial version of WhatsApp or to scraping | Uninstall the unofficial app and install the official WhatsApp Business app from an official app store |
| A warning, then business broadcasts suspended | Many people reported or blocked your broadcasts | Wait for the date shown in the app; WhatsApp says this suspension can’t be appealed |
| “Account locked due to inactivity” | Not a ban or restriction | Re-register the number promptly, or the account and its data may be deleted |
Broadcast suspensions work differently from account restrictions. We cover sending volumes and broadcast rules in a separate post on WhatsApp Business broadcast and message limits.
Why does WhatsApp restrict or ban a business account?
WhatsApp says it acts when activity looks like spam, automated or bulk messaging, or otherwise breaks its Terms of Service. The causes it names in its Help Center, Business Messaging Policy and Business App Terms:
- Bulk or automated messaging: WhatsApp tells users not to bulk message, auto-message or auto-dial, and uses machine learning and user reports to find them.
- Messaging people who didn’t opt in: the Business Messaging Policy requires opt-in permission from the recipient before you message them.
- Many people blocking or reporting you: WhatsApp says it bans accounts that are reported multiple times, and its Business App Terms say it uses blocks and complaints to decide whether a business has broken the rules.
- Unofficial or modified apps: using fake WhatsApp apps built by third parties breaks the Terms of Service and can get an account banned.
- Contact lists that aren’t yours and scraping: messaging numbers from bought or illicit lists, or extracting user information by automated means.
- Ignoring “stop” requests: the policy says businesses must respect every request to block, discontinue or opt out, on or off WhatsApp.
- A misleading profile: the Business App Terms require accurate business information and a name that is not false, misleading or deceptive.
How do you request a review of a banned WhatsApp Business account?
Open the WhatsApp Business app on the banned number and tap Request review; that is the only review route WhatsApp describes. A review is a request, not a promise: WhatsApp decides whether the ban stays.
- Open the WhatsApp Business app on the banned number and read the full message.
- If you see Request review and believe the ban was a mistake, tap it to submit the request.
- Wait for WhatsApp’s notification with the decision. You can check the status by opening the app.
- Don’t send repeat appeals from friends’ accounts. WhatsApp says contacting it outside the review process, or through another user’s account, won’t speed up the review or change the decision.
- Appeal each number separately; WhatsApp reviews one phone number per appeal.
- If the ban is lifted, you’ll see “This account can now use WhatsApp.” Verify the number again, and fix whatever caused the ban before you send another message.
If there is no Request review option, WhatsApp’s answer is that the ban is final. Accounts on the WhatsApp Business Platform (the API) follow a separate appeal process described in Meta’s developer documentation.
Ignore anyone who offers to “unban” a number for a fee. WhatsApp states that third-party services can’t ban an account or remove a ban; only WhatsApp can.
Is there a WhatsApp support email for a banned number?
For a ban, the in-app review is the route WhatsApp points to; for other questions, use Contact Us inside the app. The general contact page at whatsapp.com/contact asks you to write from your phone through Settings, Help, Contact Us, and offers a web form.
- In the WhatsApp Business app: More, then Settings, Help and feedback, Help center, Contact us, as WhatsApp’s business broadcast article describes.
- Grievance Officer in India: WhatsApp’s Help Center article “How to contact the Grievance Officer and WhatsApp in India” lists a contact form, a postal address in DLF Cyber City, Gurgaon, and the email grievance_officer_wa@support.whatsapp.com for complaints about the Terms of Service or questions about your account. Include the number in full international format, starting with +91.
WhatsApp’s ban article says contact outside the review process won’t speed up or change a review decision, so file the in-app review first, and ignore “support emails” posted on unofficial websites.
Why does a WhatsApp Business number get banned again and again?
Repeat bans and restrictions usually mean the activity that caused the first one has not stopped. WhatsApp says it can reinstate a ban if account activity continues to break its Terms, and repeated broadcast restrictions can lead to longer suspensions.
- The same bulk-sender tool, browser extension or modified app is still connected to the number.
- Messages still go to an old, bought or scraped list instead of opted-in customers.
- Broadcasts restarted to the same contacts the moment access came back.
- Staff are still adding people to groups without asking, or messaging people who said stop.
- A new SIM may have been banned before you got it: WhatsApp notes that a previous owner of the number may have broken the Terms.
A fresh number is not a fix: WhatsApp’s Business App Terms say a terminated business will not create another business account without WhatsApp’s express written permission.
Prevention checklist for small businesses
Message only people who asked to hear from you, through the official app, and stop the moment they say stop. Run through this list whether you run a clinic in DLF Phase 4, a showroom on Sohna Road or a coaching centre in Sector 29:
- Collect opt-in: ask customers at the counter, on your website or on the invoice whether they want order updates or offers on WhatsApp, and record the answer.
- Use saved contacts: broadcast lists reach only people who have saved your number, which is also a good sign they know you.
- No unofficial bulk-sender apps: use only the official WhatsApp Business app or the WhatsApp Business Platform, never modified apps, auto-dialers or extensions that send messages for you.
- Keep an honest business profile: real business name, address, hours and a support contact such as an email, website or phone number, kept up to date.
- Honour STOP: tell customers they can reply STOP, then remove them and never message them again.
- Match the promise: send only the type of message people signed up for, and clean out contacts who haven’t interacted with you in a long time.
- Ask before adding to groups: get permission first, and don’t re-add someone who left.
A shared system that records who opted in and who said stop makes these rules easier for a team to follow. Our guide to WhatsApp CRM for Indian sales teams explains how to log chats against leads using the WhatsApp Business API.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a WhatsApp Business restriction the same as a ban?
No. A restriction is temporary: you can still chat with existing contacts and groups, but you can’t start chats or calls with new contacts, create groups or use linked devices until it ends. It ends on its own and WhatsApp sends a notification. A ban means the number can’t use WhatsApp until a review in the app reverses it.
Is a WhatsApp Business restriction always 24 hours?
WhatsApp does not publish a fixed length for account restrictions; it says the restriction ends once the allocated time passes. To see how long is left, tap New Chat and pick a contact you have never chatted with, and the pop-up shows the time remaining. Business broadcast suspensions are different: WhatsApp states those last three days.
How do I recover a banned WhatsApp Business account?
Open the WhatsApp Business app on the banned number and tap Request review if the option appears. WhatsApp sends a notification with its decision, and its ban message says most reviews are completed within 24 hours. If no review option appears, WhatsApp says the ban is final and can’t be appealed. No outside service can lift a ban.
Is there an official email for a banned WhatsApp number?
WhatsApp’s India Grievance Officer article lists grievance_officer_wa@support.whatsapp.com, along with a contact form and a Gurgaon postal address, for complaints about the Terms of Service or account questions. For a ban itself, use Request review in the app first: WhatsApp says contact outside the review process won’t speed up or change the decision.
Can I just use a new number after my WhatsApp Business account is banned?
Not to carry on the same activity. WhatsApp’s Business App Terms say that if WhatsApp terminates a business account, the business will not create another WhatsApp business account without WhatsApp’s express written permission. The safer path is to request a review where the option exists and fix the cause, such as unsolicited or bulk messaging.
Will I lose my chats if my WhatsApp Business number is banned?
While the account is banned, you can’t open your chat history or backups. WhatsApp says a backup becomes available only after the phone number tied to it is unbanned. If the review succeeds, you verify your number again and can restore. If the ban is final, plan to rebuild customer records from your own invoices, CRM or contact lists.
Why does my WhatsApp Business keep getting restricted?
Usually the cause is still running: a bulk-sender tool or modified app on the number, messages to people who never opted in, or broadcasts that customers keep blocking and reporting. WhatsApp says repeated restrictions can bring longer suspensions and a ban can be reinstated. Remove unofficial tools, message only opted-in customers and honour every stop request.
