Advocate Website in Delhi NCR: Website Builder vs Custom Build

A solo advocate in Delhi NCR can start with a builder; a firm with several advocates and chambers usually outgrows one. Either way, Bar Council of India Rule 36 decides what goes on the page.

Key takeaways

  • The platform matters less than the content: Rule 36 limits an advocate's site to set particulars whichever tool you use.
  • Builders are quick for a single-page profile, but their law firm templates often ship with testimonials, counters and 'free consultation' buttons that must be removed.
  • A custom or carefully configured WordPress build suits firms that need many advocate profiles, several chambers, Hindi and English, and tight control over scripts.
  • Paid directories and listing platforms carry their own Rule 36 risk, whichever website route you choose.

Should a Delhi NCR advocate use a website builder or a custom site?

A solo advocate in Delhi NCR who needs one clear profile page can use a website builder, while a firm with several advocates, chambers and languages is usually better served by a custom or carefully configured WordPress build. In both cases the content limits come from the Bar Council of India, not from the platform.

Rule 36 of the Bar Council of India Rules bars advocates from soliciting work or advertising. Its 2008 proviso allows website information "as prescribed in the Schedule", and treats any other input as a violation (SCC Online). The Schedule, as summarised by iPleaders, covers name and contact details, enrolment number and date, State Bar Council and bar association, qualifications and areas of practice. That is a small amount of content, which is why a builder can be enough for one person.

This comparison is about tools and is not legal advice. Check your content with your State Bar Council.

What do Google Sites, Wix, WordPress and Shopify offer an advocate?

Each tool can host a simple information page; they differ in control, upkeep and how much you must remove from templates. The table compares them neutrally for an advocate's use.

PlatformSuitsWatch for
Google SitesA plain one- or two-page profile with contact detailsLimited control over design, SEO settings and a disclaimer overlay
WixA solo advocate who wants to edit pages visuallyLegal templates and apps that add reviews, chat or pop-ups; check every block
WordPress (self-hosted)A firm needing many profiles, articles, Hindi and EnglishPlugins and themes need updates; themes often bundle testimonial and counter widgets
ShopifyOnline storesBuilt for selling products, so it is not a natural fit for an advocate's information site
Custom buildFirms with several offices, structured profiles and an approval workflowNeeds a developer for changes to structure; content edits can still be simple

Two points apply to every option. First, register the domain name in your own name and keep the login yourself, so the site stays yours if you change provider. Second, use an e-mail address on that domain rather than a free mailbox; it looks more professional on a chamber board and on your letterhead, and it keeps client correspondence under your control. Check, too, whether the platform lets you export your pages if you move later.

Why do builder templates cause Rule 36 problems?

Most ready-made law firm templates are designed for markets where lawyers may advertise, so they include features that an Indian advocate should not use. The work is in removing them, and in not adding them back later.

  • Testimonial sliders and review widgets: praise from clients is self-promotion by another route.
  • Counters such as 'cases won' or 'happy clients': publicity about results.
  • 'Free consultation' and 'Hire us now' buttons: soliciting language.
  • Chat bubbles that open with a pitch: they initiate contact rather than wait for it.
  • Hero lines such as 'Delhi's leading lawyers': comparative and promotional.
  • Stock photos of courtroom wins or handshakes: they suggest outcomes; Rule 36 also names photographs connected with cases.
  • Built-in marketing tools: e-mail pop-ups, ad pixels and social promotion features.

The Bar Council of India warned advocates against social media promotion and other online advertising in a March 2025 press release, MediaNama reported. A template that looks normal for a foreign law firm can look like exactly what the Council warned about.

When does a custom site make sense for Delhi NCR advocates?

A custom build makes sense when the firm needs structure and control that a builder cannot give easily. That usually means more than one advocate, more than one chamber, or a need to lock down what can be published.

  • Structured profiles: fields that match the Schedule, so no profile can carry a promotional 'about me'.
  • Several chambers: for example a Saket or Tis Hazari chamber plus an office in Gurugram, each with its own address, map and hours.
  • A proper disclaimer: an accessible overlay that is remembered after acceptance and does not stop search engines reading the page.
  • Approval workflow: staff draft, a partner publishes.
  • Clean code: no third-party scripts you did not choose, which also keeps pages fast on mobile data.
  • Hindi and English: matched pages with the same facts.

What about lawyer directories and listing platforms?

Be cautious with any platform that ranks, promotes or sells leads for advocates, whatever website you build. The risk sits in the platform's model, not your site's software.

In P.N. Vignesh (2024 SCC OnLine Mad 2770), the Madras High Court held that advocates soliciting work through online listing platforms such as Quikr, Sulekha and Justdial breached the Advocates Act and the Bar Council of India Rules, and refused those platforms safe-harbour protection, according to SCC Online and MediaNama.

A factual Google Business Profile is different in kind: Google's guidelines let individual practitioners such as lawyers keep a profile if they are public-facing and contactable at the verified location during stated hours. Keep it to your real name, address, phone and hours, and do not solicit reviews. Our post on Google Business Profile optimisation covers set-up.

What does each route need for local search in Delhi NCR?

The same few factual elements, whichever platform you pick. Use this checklist with a builder or a custom site.

  • A courts page naming only the forums where you appear, such as the Delhi High Court or the Saket, Patiala House or Dwarka court complexes.
  • A chambers page with full address, map, nearest metro and visiting hours.
  • Identical name, address and phone on the site and on Google.
  • Clear page titles that use your name and 'Advocate', and the city, without superlatives.
  • schema.org LegalService markup (the older Attorney type is deprecated) with no rating or review markup.
  • A disclaimer page, a privacy notice for any form under the DPDP Act, 2023, and HTTPS.
  • Fast loading on mobile, since many visitors are on the move.

How do you decide between a builder and a custom build?

Match the tool to your practice size and how much you will change the site. Cost depends on the number of pages and profiles, languages, offices and whether you need an approval workflow, so start with those.

Your situationReasonable route
Solo advocate, one chamber, English onlyBuilder or Google Sites, with template features removed
Solo advocate, Hindi and English, wants articlesWordPress with a minimal theme, or a small custom site
Firm of several advocates in one officeWordPress with structured profiles, or custom
Firm with chambers in Delhi and HaryanaCustom build with per-office data and partner approval

Starting small is fine. If you begin on a builder and later move to a custom site as the practice grows, keep the same page addresses where you can, or set up permanent redirects from the old ones, so links shared by clients and existing search listings keep working. Move your Google Business Profile website link at the same time, and check that the new site's name, address and phone match it exactly.

Whatever you choose, list every widget and app on the site before launch and delete anything that praises, ranks or invites work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Wix or WordPress better for an advocate website in Delhi NCR?

Neither is better in itself. Wix suits a solo advocate who wants to edit a simple profile visually; self-hosted WordPress suits firms needing many profiles, Hindi and English, and articles, but needs regular updates. In both, remove template features such as testimonials, counters and consultation pop-ups, because Rule 36 limits what an advocate may publish.

Can I use Google Sites for my advocate profile?

Yes, for a plain one- or two-page profile with the Schedule particulars: name, contact details, enrolment details, State Bar Council, bar association, qualifications and areas of practice. The trade-off is limited control over design, SEO settings and a disclaimer overlay. It can be a reasonable start for a solo advocate who changes the site rarely.

Why should law firm templates be edited before use in India?

Many are designed for countries where lawyers may advertise, so they include testimonial sliders, 'cases won' counters, 'free consultation' buttons and chat pop-ups. Under Rule 36 of the Bar Council of India Rules these amount to advertising or soliciting. Remove them before launch and check that no app or plugin adds them back later.

Are paid lawyer directories allowed for advocates?

They carry real risk. In 2024 the Madras High Court held in P.N. Vignesh that advocates soliciting work through online listing platforms breached the Bar Council of India Rules, and the Bar Council warned against online advertising in March 2025. An accurate, non-promotional Google Business Profile is a safer way to be findable. This is not legal advice.

What decides the cost of an advocate website?

The main drivers are the number of advocate profiles and pages, how many chambers or offices you list, whether you need Hindi and English, whether you want articles, and whether the firm needs a partner-approval workflow. A single profile on a builder is far simpler than a multi-office custom build, so define those needs before comparing quotes.
