Key takeaways

  • Sonipat's judiciary has grown from one court in 1959 to establishments at Sonipat, Gohana, Ganaur and Kharkhoda, so a firm site should say clearly who appears where.
  • For a firm, the Rule 36 Schedule particulars apply to each advocate: name, enrolment number and date, State Bar Council, bar association, qualifications and areas of practice.
  • Google's rules for practitioners allow a profile for the firm's location and separate profiles for individual public-facing advocates, each named as in real life.
  • Paid lead platforms, testimonials and results claims are outside what the rules permit.

What should a Sonipat advocate or law firm website contain?

A Sonipat advocate or law firm website should contain the permitted particulars for every advocate, the courts each one attends, and the chamber or office address with a map. It should inform, not persuade.

Sonipat sits on Delhi's northern edge, and advocates here commonly work in groups: senior and junior counsel sharing a chamber, family practices, or small firms that cover civil, criminal and revenue work together. A website for such a group has one extra job compared with a solo profile. It has to make clear which advocate holds which enrolment, which courts each one attends and how a visitor reaches the right person.

Planned well, law firm website design for a Sonipat chamber needs only a handful of pages: a home page, one profile per advocate, a courts page, a contact page and a disclaimer.

Before anything is written, agree inside the chamber on who checks the content. One partner should confirm every profile against the advocate's enrolment certificate, and the site should be reviewed again whenever someone joins, leaves or transfers their enrolment. An out-of-date profile is a small problem for a client but an avoidable one for the firm.

How does Rule 36 apply to a firm with several advocates?

The same limits apply to every advocate named on the site: only the Schedule particulars, and no solicitation or advertising of any kind. A firm name does not widen what may be shown.

Rule 36, in Part VI, Chapter II, Section IV of the Bar Council of India Rules, says an advocate shall not solicit work or advertise, "either directly or indirectly" (text reproduced by the Bar Council of Delhi). Its 2008 proviso allows "website information as prescribed in the Schedule under intimation to and as approved by the Bar Council of India" (itatonline.org). For a firm, build each advocate's profile from that list:

Particular in the ScheduleHow to show it for each advocate
NameFull name as on the roll
Address, phone, emailChamber address; a direct number or the chamber's common number
Enrolment number and dateAs issued, for example by the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana
State Bar Council (original and current)Both, if the advocate has transferred
Bar associationFor example, the district bar association the advocate belongs to
QualificationsDegrees and the institution, without rankings or awards
Areas of practiceA plain list, no outcomes

This is a planning summary, not legal advice. Check the current requirements with the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana before publishing.

How should the site present the Sonipat, Gohana, Ganaur and Kharkhoda courts?

Use one courts page that lists each establishment and, beside it, the advocates who regularly appear there. Clients from Gohana or Kharkhoda can then see at a glance whom to contact.

The District Court Sonepat history page records how the judgeship grew:

LocationVerified detail
SonipatFirst judicial court from 15 May 1959; courts shifted to the present Judicial Complex-cum-Mini Secretariat in 1977
GohanaUpgraded from tehsil to sub-division on 12 April 1965
GanaurFirst judicial court functioning from 17 September 2001
KharkhodaFirst judicial court functioning from 27 April 2015

List only the locations where your advocates genuinely appear. If one advocate sits at Gohana on fixed days, say so plainly. If nobody does, leave Gohana out rather than adding it for search purposes; a place name used only as a keyword is exactly the kind of indirect advertising the rule targets.

Should a Sonipat site mention practice in Delhi or the High Court?

Yes, if it is true and regular; state it as a fact under each advocate's profile and nowhere else. Because Sonipat borders Delhi, some advocates also appear in Delhi courts or in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court sits in the Capitol Complex in Chandigarh and covers Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh (Wikipedia). The Delhi district court complexes include Tis Hazari, Patiala House, Saket, Karkardooma, Dwarka and Rohini. Write a line such as "Appears before: District Courts, Sonipat; Punjab and Haryana High Court" and stop there.

  • Do not list a court because you once filed a matter there.
  • Do not describe judges, benches or past rulings in your favour.
  • Do not use phrases like "practising in all courts of Delhi NCR".

Keep the enrolment details accurate here too. An advocate enrolled with the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana should show that roll, and any transfer should be reflected on the profile as soon as it takes effect.

What should a Sonipat law firm keep off its website?

Keep off anything that markets the firm: testimonials, results, client names, comparisons and paid lead-generation tie-ups. These go beyond the Schedule and can be treated as misconduct.

Leave outWhy
Testimonials and star ratingsNot a permitted particular; amounts to indirect advertising
Case results or success percentagesNot a permitted particular; may also mislead
Client logos or a client listNot permitted, and may breach confidentiality
"Best law firm in Sonipat" or similarA comparative claim, outside the Schedule
Links to paid lawyer-listing or lead platformsCan amount to solicitation through a third party

The last point is live. According to SCC Online, after directions from the Madras High Court in 2024, the BCI issued notices in July 2024 against online platforms that advertised advocates' services. A firm website should not depend on, or link to, such platforms.

What page structure works for a Sonipat law chamber?

Five or six short pages, each with one job, work far better than a long single page. They are easy to keep accurate when an advocate joins or leaves.

  1. Disclaimer screen: a short note that the site is information permitted by the BCI, not solicitation or legal advice.
  2. Home: firm or chamber name, address, phone and a list of practice areas.
  3. Advocates: one profile per advocate with the Schedule particulars.
  4. Courts: Sonipat, Gohana, Ganaur, Kharkhoda and any higher courts, with who appears where.
  5. Contact: map, hours and a short form asking only for name, phone and the general nature of the query.
  6. Privacy note: how enquiry data is used and kept, in line with the DPDP Act, 2023.

Offer Hindi versions of the home, courts and contact pages at least. Many clients in Gohana, Kharkhoda and the villages read Hindi more comfortably, and the facts stay the same in both languages.

How should several Sonipat advocates handle Google Business Profiles?

Create one profile for the chamber or firm location and, if wanted, separate profiles for individual public-facing advocates, each named only with their real name. This follows Google's own rules for practitioners.

Google's Business Profile guidelines name lawyers as individual practitioners. Where several practitioners work at one location, "the organization should create a Business Profile for this location, separate from that of the practitioner", and the practitioner's profile title should contain only their name. Do not add keywords such as "divorce lawyer Sonipat" to any profile name, keep the address identical to your website, and do not request reviews. Our local SEO guide explains the wider setup.

  • Firm profile: the chamber or firm name exactly as on the signboard, with the office address and common phone number.
  • Practitioner profiles: only for advocates who are public-facing and can be reached at that address during the listed hours.
  • Categories and description: accurate practice areas, written as facts, with no claims.
  • Housekeeping: remove duplicate profiles and update hours on court holidays if you close.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Sonipat law firm have one website for all its advocates?

Yes. One site can carry a profile for each advocate, as long as every profile stays within the Schedule to BCI Rule 36: name, contact details, enrolment number and date, State Bar Council, bar association, qualifications and areas of practice. The firm name does not widen what may be shown. This is general information, not legal advice.

Should we list the Gohana, Ganaur and Kharkhoda courts?

List them only if one of your advocates genuinely appears there. The Sonipat judgeship has courts at Sonipat, Ganaur since 2001 and Kharkhoda since 2015, and Gohana is a sub-division of the district. Showing who appears where helps clients reach the right advocate. Adding a town purely as a search keyword is unwise.

Can our firm's website show client names or logos?

No. Client names and logos are not among the particulars the Schedule permits, and publishing them can also breach client confidentiality. The same applies to testimonials, star ratings and descriptions of past matters. Keep the site to the permitted particulars, practice areas and courts, and let clients find you through accurate contact details.

Is it allowed to join online lawyer-listing platforms?

Be careful. Rule 36 bars soliciting work or advertising, directly or indirectly, and in July 2024 the BCI issued notices against online platforms that advertised advocates' services, following Madras High Court directions. Before joining any platform that promotes advocates or sells leads, take advice from your State Bar Council.

How should multiple advocates appear on Google Maps?

Google's guidelines allow a profile for the shared office location and separate profiles for individual public-facing practitioners there. Each practitioner profile should carry only the advocate's real name, with no keywords or taglines. Keep addresses and phone numbers identical to the website, and avoid requesting reviews, since that can look like solicitation.
