Key takeaways
- Google says all advertisers will eventually have to complete advertiser verification; some accounts are asked earlier, for example after suspicious activity or when they advertise in sensitive industries.
- Tasks are started by a Google Ads admin under Admin > Policy > Account, and the details you submit must exactly match your payments profile.
- For Indian organisations Google lists documents such as a GST certificate, Udyam (MSME) certificate, Certificate of Incorporation or partnership deed registration; individuals can use a passport, driving licence, voter ID or physical PAN card, but not Aadhaar.
- If your notice has a deadline, it can’t be extended, and Google pauses the account if you are not verified by then.
What is Google Ads advertiser verification?
Advertiser verification is a Google Ads programme in which you prove who you are, or what your business is, before or while you advertise. Google’s advertiser verification page says it is part of its transparency efforts and that “all advertisers will eventually be required to complete advertiser verification.”
In practice it means answering a few questions about your organisation and who pays for the ads, and then uploading documents or confirming details such as a phone number. Once you pass, your verified name and location appear in the ad disclosures people can open from your ads, and in Google’s Ads Transparency Center.
It is easy to confuse three different checks that use the word “verification”:
- Advertiser verification: confirms the identity of the person or organisation behind the Google Ads account. This is the subject of this guide.
- Google Business Profile verification: confirms you own a Maps listing. It is separate, and finishing it does not complete advertiser verification.
- Advanced Verification: a separate, slower check Google uses for a few service categories. Its help page names locksmiths in the US and Canada and garage door services in the US; India is not named there.
For a packers and movers firm on Sohna Road, a clinic in Sector 29 or a coaching centre in Rohtak, the practical point is simple: keep your registration papers and payments profile in order, because the notice can arrive at any time and a missed deadline stops every campaign at once.
Is advertiser verification mandatory in Google Ads, and who gets asked first?
Yes, eventually for everyone, but Google rolls it out gradually and selects some accounts first. Google lists reasons such as advertising behaviour or ad content labelled as potentially suspicious, ads in certain industries like financial services, ads on brand-related searches, and use of features that are often misused.
Google’s overview page also says accounts may be selected after a suspension, or asked to verify again after major changes such as a legal name change or a merger. Some accounts also see extra industry questions: Google’s tasks page lists industries such as healthcare, financial products, gambling, elections and cryptocurrencies, where Google Ads “needs extra info about your organization.”
Common situations for local Indian businesses:
- A new account with a new card: billing tasks such as confirming the payment method can appear early.
- Brand names in keywords or ad text: a repair shop bidding on an appliance brand’s name is the kind of “brand-related queries” activity Google mentions. Such a shop must also never imply it is an authorised service centre if it is not.
- Clinics, hospitals and diagnostic centres: healthcare is on Google’s list of industries with extra questions. Our guide to Google Ads for doctors and clinics covers the ad side.
- Loans, insurance, investments and other financial services: India has a separate Financial Services Verification, where most advertisers first prove regulator authorisation through a third-party vendor named by Google.
If your account has a notice with no deadline, Google says you can keep running ads, though serving limits may affect performance until you finish. Verifying early removes the risk of a sudden pause later.
What are the Google Ads advertiser verification steps?
An admin opens Admin > Policy > Account in Google Ads, clicks Start task on each task shown, answers the questions and uploads documents. Google notifies you in the account or by email when verification is needed, and the same page shows your deadline and status.
Google’s tasks page notes that the older “Advertiser verification” page is now called “Account”, so older guides may show a different menu. The order of tasks varies by account, but a typical run looks like this:
- Check your role. Google says only a Google Ads account admin can complete the tasks, and some tasks, such as the video selfie, need an admin on the payments profile.
- Check the payments profile first. Under Billing settings, note the account type (Individual or Organisation), the name and the address. Your documents must exactly match these.
- Answer the organisation questions. You say what type of organisation you are and who pays for the ads. If you manage ads for a client, choose the agency option; Google warns that otherwise the account may be paused or suspended.
- Confirm who pays for the ads. This answer decides the payer name shown in ad disclosures.
- Complete billing tasks if shown. These can include answering questions about payment history, making a payment, or confirming your payment method by entering a code from a small temporary charge on your statement.
- Submit identity or organisation documents. Upload clear colour images or PDFs through the Ads interface, never by email.
- Confirm your phone number or affiliation if asked. Individuals may get a six-digit code by phone; organisations with a deadline may get a code by SMS or organisation email to confirm the person is linked to the business.
- Answer the EU political ads question. A local business that runs no EU political ads answers No; Google says a Yes means the campaign can’t run in the European Union.
- Wait for review and check status on the same Account page.
Two cautions before you upload. First, the account type matters: Google’s account type page says a sole proprietor using a registered trade name belongs under Organisation, that the type can be changed only once, and that changing it means a new payments profile and verifying again. Second, if your notice says you are an agency or a client, follow that path rather than uploading your own papers for someone else’s account.
If an agency runs your ads, Google lets the agency either send you the task link or complete the client task for you. Either way, the documents must be your business’s own, and Google asks third parties not to upload papers for several advertisers in one file.
Which documents does Google accept for Indian businesses?
Google’s India document requirements page lists registration documents such as a GST certificate, Udyam (MSME) registration certificate, Certificate of Incorporation or partnership deed registration. An authorised representative may also need to upload a government-issued photo ID.
The organisation documents Google lists for India are:
| Document (Google’s wording) | Usually fits | Point to check |
|---|---|---|
| GST Certificate | Proprietors, partnerships and companies registered for GST | Legal name and trade name must match your payments profile |
| Udyam (MSME) Registration Certificate | Small businesses registered as MSMEs | Name and address as on the certificate |
| Certificate of Incorporation, Memorandum or Articles of Association | Private and public limited companies | You may also provide the Corporate Identification Number (CIN) |
| Partnership Deed Registration Certificate | Registered partnership firms | Firm name exactly as registered |
| Registration of Society or Trust Deed | Schools, charitable trusts, societies, some coaching and health institutions | Society or trust name must match the payments profile |
| VAT Certificate | Older registrations | Must still be valid and readable |
| Official letter with full name, address and date | Government departments and agencies only | Not for private businesses |
The authorised representative’s ID can be a passport, identification card, driving licence or permanent residence card, and Google says it can be issued in any country. That person must be an admin of the Google Ads account and/or the payments profile that pays for the ads, so a Gurgaon company should not send in the ID of a director who has no access to the account.
Trade names cause many mismatches. Google’s tasks page says that if you use a trade name or “Doing Business As” name, “the trade or DBA name and legal name must match the registration document.” A shop known locally by its brand name, but registered for GST under the owner’s own name, should make sure both names line up across the certificate and the payments profile.
Rule and form names change. Always open the India version of Google’s document page from inside your verification task before you upload, and treat this table as a starting point rather than the final list.
Can an individual complete advertiser verification in India?
Yes. If your payments profile is set to Individual, Google asks for an Indian government-issued photo ID: an Indian passport, driving licence, voter ID or PAN card. Aadhaar is not accepted, and a PAN card must be the physical card, not an e-PAN or a DigiLocker copy.
The Individual type suits freelancers, consultants and people advertising for personal needs who are not registered as a business. Here is what Google’s India page says about each ID:
| Document | Accepted for identity? | Notes from Google’s India page |
|---|---|---|
| Indian passport | Yes | Must be valid, not expired |
| Driving licence | Yes | Upload front and back separately when asked |
| Voter ID | Yes | Clear colour photo of the original card |
| PAN card (physical) | Yes | Plastic or older laminated paper card; front and back |
| e-PAN, PDF PAN or DigiLocker extract | No | Digital versions are not accepted |
| Aadhaar card | No | Not accepted for identity or for proof of address |
Some individuals are also asked for a second proof of address that matches the submitted name and address. Google accepts a second government photo ID (the side with the address), a utility, phone or internet bill dated within the last 60 days, a bank statement dated within the last 60 days, or a lease or mortgage agreement. PAN and Aadhaar cannot be used for this, and Google says the address won’t appear in ad disclosures.
Individuals may also see a phone task. Google says the phone number’s area code must match your payments profile country, so an Indian profile needs an Indian number, and after five failed attempts you will be asked for a photo ID instead.
How long does Google Ads advertiser verification take?
Google’s timelines page says review can take up to 5 business days, depending on the task, and in rare cases up to 30 days for accounts without a deadline. If you have a deadline, it can’t be extended.
| Situation | What Google says | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Notice with a deadline | Account is paused if you are not verified by the deadline; no extension | Start the tasks the day the notice arrives |
| Notice without a deadline | You can still run ads; serving limits may affect performance | Verify when papers are ready, before limits hurt leads |
| Review after you submit | Up to 5 business days, depending on the task; rarely up to 30 days | Avoid planning a big campaign launch in that window |
| Status update in the account | Can take up to 5 business days to show | Check Admin > Policy > Account rather than resubmitting |
| Appeal after a pause for failed attempts | Most appeals reviewed within 5–7 business days | Give full details in the appeal to avoid delays |
Google’s account pausing page refers to a 30-day notice period for submitting documents. Treat the date in your own notification as the real deadline, because that is the one Google enforces for your account.
Timing matters most for seasonal businesses. A coaching institute before admissions, a mover before its busy shifting season, or an AC repair service as the weather turns hot cannot afford a paused account in its busiest weeks. Finish verification in a quiet month.
What happens if you miss the deadline or verification fails?
If you miss a deadline, Google pauses the account: paused accounts can’t run any ads, though you can still open the account and its reports. You can unpause it only by getting verified, and the account is unpaused after Google completes its review.
A paused account looks like any other “no impressions” problem from the outside, so check account notifications before you touch bids or keywords. Our guide on a Google Ads campaign not running walks through the other causes in order. If the account is suspended rather than paused, Google says you must complete verification before you can appeal, and it stays suspended until the appeal is granted.
Google names three common reasons why google ads advertiser verification failed: the document could not be verified, the name does not match, or the document type is not supported. Use this checklist before you resubmit:
- Open Billing settings and copy the payments profile name and address exactly, including spelling, initials and “Pvt Ltd” or “LLP”.
- Pick a document from Google’s India list for your account type (Individual or Organisation).
- Use the original document, not a photocopy, a screenshot or an e-version where Google asks for a physical card.
- Photograph it in colour with your phone’s own camera app, in good light, with all four corners visible.
- Check the ID is not expired and the bill or bank statement is within 60 days, if you use one for address.
- Upload through the task in Google Ads only; do not email documents to anyone claiming to be Google.
- If the name on the payments profile is wrong, Google says you can change it during the task, so correct it rather than forcing a mismatched document through.
Phishing emails can imitate Google. Reach the task by signing in to Google Ads yourself and opening the Account page under Admin and Policy, rather than clicking a link in an unexpected message.
What changes after you are verified?
Your verified legal name, or trademark name, and location appear in ad disclosures, My Ad Center and the Ads Transparency Center, with a verified badge. If the advertiser name differs from the payments profile name, Google also shows the payer name.
Google’s ads transparency page explains what the public can see. For verified advertisers this includes ad creatives and the dates and locations where ads served. That is one more reason to keep ads accurate: anyone, including a competitor or an unhappy customer, can look up what you have run.
- Payer name: Google says you can edit it under Admin > Policy > Account, and the edited name then replaces the payments profile name.
- Legal name changes or mergers: Google may ask you to verify again.
- Changing account type: switching between Individual and Organisation means verifying again.
- New admins: keep at least one admin from the business itself, so tasks are never stuck with someone who has left.
Verification only confirms who you are. It does not approve your ads, raise your Quality Score or lower costs. Ads still go through normal policy review, and keywords, landing pages and tracking still decide results. If you are setting up from scratch, follow our step-by-step guide to creating a Google Ads campaign, and add your GSTIN to the payments profile as explained in our post on GST on Google Ads.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is advertiser verification mandatory in Google Ads?
Google says all advertisers will eventually be required to complete advertiser verification, as part of a gradual rollout. Some accounts are selected earlier, for example when activity looks suspicious, when ads run in industries such as financial services, or when ads target brand-related searches. If your notice has a deadline, verification is required by that date, or Google pauses the account until you are verified.
How long does Google Ads advertiser verification take?
Google says review can take up to five business days, depending on the task, and in rare cases up to 30 days for accounts without a deadline. The status shown in your account can also take up to five business days to update. If your notice has a deadline, start immediately, because Google says that deadline cannot be extended and a missed deadline pauses the account.
Can I use Aadhaar for Google Ads advertiser verification in India?
No. Google’s India document page says Aadhaar cards are not accepted, either for identity or as proof of address. Individuals can use an Indian passport, driving licence, voter ID or a physical PAN card. For PAN, Google does not accept an e-PAN, an emailed or printed PDF, or a DigiLocker extract, so photograph the original plastic or laminated card, front and back.
Which documents can a proprietorship use for advertiser verification?
A sole proprietor who trades under a registered business name generally sits under the Organisation account type, according to Google. For India, Google lists registration documents such as a GST certificate or an Udyam (MSME) registration certificate. The legal name and any trade name must match the payments profile exactly, and an admin may also need to upload a valid government-issued photo ID.
Why did my Google Ads advertiser verification fail?
Google names three common causes: the document could not be verified, the name did not match the payments profile, or the document type is not supported for your country and account type. Check the exact payments profile name, choose a document from Google’s India list, and upload a clear colour photo of the original, unexpired document through the task, not a photocopy or screenshot.
