Key takeaways

  • Google’s Third-party consumer technical support policy does not allow ads for hardware repair services, data recovery, software installations or other tech support for consumer devices offered by third-party providers.
  • The policy covers online and offline support, lists no country exceptions and describes no certification or verification route, so a walk-in repair counter is not treated differently on the policy page.
  • What is allowed: ads for the sale of consumer technology, and tech support offered exclusively to businesses. Build campaigns around those, with location and call assets and tight negatives.
  • Never imply you are a brand’s authorised service centre. Google treats that kind of misrepresentation as egregious and can suspend accounts without prior warning.

Can a mobile or laptop repair shop run Google Ads?

Not for repair services. Google’s policy on third-party consumer technical support says technical support for consumer technology products and online services offered by third-party providers is not allowed, and it lists hardware repair services as an example. A repair shop can still advertise other things, such as selling devices and accessories.

Many shop owners in Gurgaon set up a Search campaign for “mobile screen repair near me”, see the ads disapproved and assume they made a setup mistake. Usually they did not. The rule sits in Google’s Third-party consumer technical support policy, part of the wider Other restricted businesses policies. The table below repeats what the policy page lists, word for word where possible.

Not allowed (Google’s non-exhaustive examples)Allowed (as stated on the policy page)
Online and offline technical support and troubleshooting for consumer tech products and services, such as data recovery, security, virus removal, booting, internet connectivity, account recovery, password resets or login support, installations and maintenanceAdvertising the sale of consumer technology, where the ad’s destination might contain minor navigational features related to technical support
Hardware repair servicesAdvertising of technical support services provided exclusively to businesses
Software installations—
Aggregators and comparison sites for technical support—

This is not a new rule. Google’s 2018 announcement said it would begin restricting ads in this category globally because of misleading ad experiences from third-party tech support providers. An update on the same post, dated September 2019, says Google tested a verification program for legitimate providers, found the risk of abusive or misleading offline experiences still too high, and decided to continue blocking these ads.

Is an in-person repair counter treated differently from remote tech support?

Not on the policy page. It names “online and offline” support and “hardware repair services” without any exception for walk-in shops, lists no countries where the rule does not apply, and describes no certification or verification you can apply for.

It is easy to think the rule only targets remote “call us to fix your computer” operators, and that history is part of why Google acted. But the current wording is broader. A shop fitting a new screen at its counter in Sector 29, a pickup service collecting laptops from homes on Sohna Road and a remote software helpline all fall under the examples Google gives.

  • No certification route: other policies on the same page, such as government documents and free desktop software, describe certification steps. The tech support section does not, and the 2019 update says the verification test was stopped.
  • No country list: the section has no regional exceptions. The 2018 announcement described the restriction as global.
  • Not defined on the page: the policy says “third-party providers” but does not explain whether a brand-authorised service centre counts as third-party. If that is your situation, ask Google Ads support before spending, rather than assuming either way.

Google Ads policies cover ads. Your shop can still be found through its Google Business Profile listing and your own website, which follow separate Google guidelines. Our local SEO guide covers that route.

What happens if you advertise repair services anyway?

The ads are disapproved, and repeated violations can lead to account suspension. For this policy Google says it will issue a warning at least 7 days before suspending an account, so you get a chance to fix things.

The policy page’s own options to fix are plain: remove or revise any mention of repair services, hardware repairs, software installation or technical support in your ads or landing page, and make sure your “About Us” page or business description clearly states the services you offer. Edited ads are re-reviewed automatically, which Google says typically takes 24 to 48 hours. If you believe Google made an error, you can appeal from your account. If you cannot or choose not to fix a violation, Google suggests removing the ad to help prevent suspension for repeated violations.

  • Do not disguise repair ads: an ad that says “phone accessories” but lands on a screen repair page runs into the Misrepresentation policy, which does not allow promotions that are not relevant to the destination, or inconsistencies between the ad and the landing page.
  • Check the status column: in Ads and assets, hover over each status to see the reason. Our guide to campaigns with no impressions covers other causes too.
  • Keep it clean: a history of policy compliance matters later, for example when you want features such as message assets.

How do trademark and misrepresentation rules affect repair shops?

Never suggest you are a brand’s official or authorised service centre unless you are. Google’s Misrepresentation policy does not allow making it seem you are supported by another brand when you are not, and treats such violations as egregious, with suspension on detection and without prior warning.

Under “Unacceptable business practices”, the Misrepresentation policy says you cannot make it seem you are supported by another brand, organisation or government entity when you are not, offer services you cannot deliver, or impersonate other brands to hide your identity or imply connections or qualifications. It also does not allow an inaccurate business name, or one that does not clearly represent the advertised business. Google says suspended advertisers in this category are not allowed to advertise again, and reinstatement happens only in compelling circumstances.

The Trademarks policy works differently. Google reviews trademark use when the owner complains, and may then restrict it. It will restrict a trademark used in an ad from a direct competitor, or used in a confusing, deceptive or misleading way. It does not restrict trademarks used as keywords, and it allows ads that send people to pages selling the trademarked products, replacement parts or compatible products, provided the ad and page make clear whether you are a reseller.

Write this (if true)Avoid this
Your own shop name in headlines and on the pageA phone or laptop brand’s name followed by “service centre”
“Independent store” or “authorised reseller” only if you hold that status in writing“Official”, “authorised” or “brand-approved” wording you cannot prove
“Compatible charger for” plus a model name, on a page that sells itBrand logos or look-alike colours that suggest a link
Your real address, GST number and opening hoursA business name that copies or closely resembles a brand

What can a repair shop advertise instead, and how should ad groups look?

Build campaigns around what the policy allows: the sale of phones, laptops and accessories, and IT support sold only to businesses. Keep each ad group on one product theme with its own matching page, and leave repair keywords out entirely.

The brief most shop owners start with is “screen, battery, charging port, water damage, keyboard and hinge, data recovery”. Every one of those is either hardware repair or data recovery, which the policy names as not allowed for third-party providers. Do not build them as ad groups. Use the table below instead, and only for the lines you actually sell.

Ad groupExample keywordsLanding page
Phone accessoriesmobile cover shop near me, tempered glass for phone, fast charger and cable, phone accessories shop gurgaonAccessories page with stock, prices, address and a call button
Laptop accessorieslaptop bag gurgaon, laptop charger shop, wireless mouse and keyboard, laptop cooling padLaptop accessories page grouped by type
Devices for salebuy laptop in gurgaon, new mobile phone shop near me, refurbished laptop shop gurgaonDevices page with models in stock, warranty terms and visit timings
Office IT support (businesses only)office computer maintenance gurgaon, it support for small offices, annual maintenance for office laptopsA separate business page that clearly says the service is only for companies, with GST billing and an office enquiry button
  • Business-only means business-only: the allowance on the policy page is for technical support “provided exclusively to businesses”. If you also fix phones for walk-in customers, keep that off the business page and ask Google Ads support how your account will be reviewed.
  • Refurbished stock: describe condition and warranty honestly. Google’s Misrepresentation policy does not allow offers that are unavailable or hard to find on the landing page.
  • Repair-free headlines: do not mention repair, fixing or replacement in sales ad text, since the options to fix ask you to remove those mentions.

How should you set location, call and location assets for walk-in and pickup?

For walk-in sales, target a radius around the shop and add a location asset linked to your Google Business Profile. For delivery or office visits, target only the areas you really cover. Add a call asset scheduled for the hours someone answers the phone.

Google’s location targeting page lets you target cities, areas within a country, postal codes in some countries, or a radius around a location, with a minimum radius of 1 km. Google warns that a very small radius may make ads show only intermittently or not at all. It recommends “Presence or interest” for Search, and suggests “Presence” when you only want people physically in your locations, which usually suits a shop counter.

  • Walk-in shop: a radius around a shop near MG Road or in a DLF phase market, on Presence, reaches people who can actually visit.
  • Delivery or office visits: pick the sectors and areas you serve, for example Udyog Vihar and Cyber City for business clients, and exclude the rest.
  • Location assets: location assets can show your address, a map or the approximate distance, a call button and a details page with hours and directions. They link to your Business Profile.
  • Call assets: call assets add a call button on mobile and a “Call us” button on desktop, and you can set them to show only during business hours. Google warns that putting a phone number elsewhere in the ad text may get the ad disapproved.
  • WhatsApp: message assets can open a chat on your WhatsApp Business number on Search and Performance Max. Google lists them as beta and requires a good policy history and completed Advertiser verification, and asks you not to name the messaging platform in the headline.

Which negative keywords should a phone and laptop shop add?

Add repair-intent words as negatives in every sales campaign, so your accessory and device ads stay away from repair searches you cannot serve with ads. Then block jobs, courses, wholesale and free searches.

ThemeExample negative keywordsWhy
Repair intentrepair, repairing, replacement, fix, not working, service centre, data recovery, water damageKeeps sales ads off searches that are about repair, which you cannot advertise
Jobs and trainingjob, jobs, vacancy, salary, course, training, institutePeople looking for work or classes, not customers
Wholesale and business opportunitywholesale, distributor, franchise, dealershipSkip this theme if you do supply other shops
Free and DIYfree, how to, diy, pdf, downloadResearch and download searches rarely buy

Google’s negative keywords page notes that negatives do not match close variants, so add singular and plural forms and synonyms yourself (“job” and “jobs”). Casing and misspellings are handled automatically.

How do you build the landing page and track calls and WhatsApp clicks?

Send each ad group to a sales page that matches it, shows your address and hours, and keeps repair content to no more than navigation. Track calls from ads, calls from the website and WhatsApp clicks as separate conversions.

Google allows a sales ad’s destination to contain minor navigational features related to technical support. It does not define “minor”, so a menu link is safer than repair banners, repair pricing or a repair booking form on the page the ad points to. Your “About Us” page should state plainly what you sell and do. If your current site mixes everything on one page, a website built for Gurgaon businesses with separate product pages makes this easier.

  1. Calls from ads: turn on call reporting so calls from call and location assets are counted, with a minimum call length. Google’s call reporting page lists India among countries with forwarding numbers, and notes caller ID may not show on some calls in India.
  2. Calls from your website: website call tracking shows a Google forwarding number to visitors who came from an ad, using the Google tag.
  3. Tap-to-call and WhatsApp buttons: clicks on a number, button or link on your mobile site can be tracked as conversions, but Google notes that it tracks only the click, not the call itself. A WhatsApp click likewise shows a chat was opened, not that a sale happened.
  4. Sales and visits: note in a register or CRM which calls and chats became purchases, and which ad group they came from. Google also supports importing call conversions from another system.
  5. Test before trusting: call from the ad preview, tap each button and check that every conversion appears in Google Ads.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a mobile phone repair shop advertise screen repair on Google Ads?

No. Google’s Third-party consumer technical support policy does not allow technical support for consumer technology offered by third-party providers, and it lists hardware repair services as an example. Ads for screen, battery or charging port repair are likely to be disapproved. A shop can still advertise the sale of phones and accessories, keeping repair mentions out of those ads and their landing pages.

Is there a Google certification that lets repair shops run ads?

Google’s policy page for third-party consumer technical support describes no certification or verification route. Google said in 2018 that it would restrict these ads globally, and an update in September 2019 said a verification program it tested would not go ahead, so the block continues. Check the current policy page or ask Google Ads support before planning campaigns.

Does the policy apply to walk-in repair shops or only to remote tech support?

The policy page covers both. It names “online and offline” technical support and lists hardware repair services, with no exception for in-person counters, pickup services or particular countries. Remote helplines, home pickup and walk-in repair all fall under the examples Google gives, so plan Google Ads around the activities the page allows instead.

Can I use a phone or laptop brand name in my Google Ads?

Never in a way that suggests you are that brand’s official or authorised service centre when you are not. Google treats that as misrepresentation, which can lead to suspension without prior warning. The Trademarks policy does allow trademarks as keywords, and allows ads for pages that sell the trademarked or compatible products, if it is clear you are a reseller.

What can a laptop repair shop advertise on Google Ads?

It can advertise what the policy allows: the sale of laptops, phones and accessories, and technical support provided exclusively to businesses, such as office computer maintenance on a separate business-only page. Use location and call assets, add repair words as negative keywords in sales campaigns, and track calls and WhatsApp clicks as conversions.
