- Google's help pages say not to create a new Business Profile for the same business, and that an appeal can be submitted only once.
- Evidence such as business registration, licences, tax certificates and utility bills helps, as long as the name and address match the profile.
What does a suspended or restricted Business Profile mean?
Google may suspend or disable a Business Profile, or restrict the Google Account that manages it, when it finds that the profile does not follow its guidelines. Google's help page on fixing suspended or disabled profiles describes what each action does.
| Action | What Google says happens | How to appeal (outside UK/EEA) |
|---|---|---|
| Profile suspended or disabled | The public can't go to the profile, and the owner and managers can't act on it | Business Profile appeals tool |
| Account restricted | All Business Profiles managed by the account are suspended, and you can't create or claim other profiles | Appeal the account first, then the profile |
| Owner's Google Account removed | All locations owned by that user are removed | Locations return if the account is reinstated |
| Manager's Google Account removed | The manager is suspended on the accounts they manage; the locations are not affected | Access returns if the account is reinstated |
| Edit or media rejected | A change to name, category, address, phone or website, or a post, photo or video, is not published | Contact Google Business Profile support |
Google's policy overview adds that an account may be restricted when a merchant shows a pattern of violating Business Profile policies, and that a restriction on an account used for another Google product can also lead to a profile suspension.
Why does Google suspend Business Profiles?
Most suspensions trace back to a mismatch between the profile and Google's guidelines. Google's guidelines for representing your business list the rules, and these are the ones Indian small businesses most often run into:
- Keywords in the name: the name should reflect your real-world name as used on your signboard, website and stationery. Google says unnecessary information in the name isn't permitted and could result in suspension. A name like "[Your Shop Name] AC Repair Service Sohna Road" adds a service description and a location, which Google lists as not acceptable.
- Virtual offices and mailboxes: a rented mailing address you don't operate from is not eligible, and P.O. boxes are not accepted. A co-working office qualifies only with clear signage, staff present and customers received during business hours.
- Service-area mistakes: if you travel to customers and don't serve them at your address, such as a plumber working from home, Google says you should hide your business address. Google says the overall service area shouldn't extend farther than about 2 hours of driving time from where the business is based, though larger areas may suit some businesses.
- Duplicate profiles: Google allows one profile per business, and says not to create more than one page for each location, in one account or several.
- Category misuse: use as few categories as possible to describe your core business, pick ones that complete "This business IS a", and do not use categories as keywords.
- Phone and website: numbers and links must belong to the actual business. Redirects, referral landing pages and premium-rate numbers are not allowed.
- Fake engagement: Google's prohibited content policy bans paid reviews, incentives for reviews and reviews posted from multiple accounts by one person.
Google's policy overview also says it may disable a profile if it determines the business doesn't exist at the location claimed, and that ineligible types include lead-generation agents, online-only businesses and rental or for-sale properties.
How do you check your profile's status?
Open the official Google Business Profile appeals tool, sign in with the Google Account that manages the profile and select the profile. The tool shows the status on the right.
- Eligible for appeal: you can still submit an appeal for this decision.
- Submitted: your appeal is with Google.
- Approved or Not Approved: Google has decided.
- Can't be appealed: the tool does not accept an appeal for this decision.
When you select a decision, the tool shows its date, the reason, a link to the policy Google says was violated and whether it can be appealed. Read that policy carefully before you write anything. If you don't see your profile, check that you are signed in to the right account, since owners often set up the profile years ago from an old Gmail ID.
What should you prepare before you appeal?
Google's first instruction is to make sure your profile follows all the guidelines, then gather evidence. Because appeals can only be submitted once, prepare everything first.
Google lists these types of evidence that can help strengthen an appeal:
- Official business registration
- A business licence
- Tax certificates
- Utility bills for the business, such as electricity, phone, water or internet
Google's tip is that the business name and address on every document should match the profile you are appealing for. Google does not publish an India-specific list, but documents of these types may include a GST registration certificate, a shop and establishment registration or trade licence, and an electricity or broadband bill in the business name. If any document shows an old address or a different name spelling, sort that out first.
- Note the reason and policy shown in the appeals tool.
- Compare your name, address, service area, categories, phone and website against the guidelines.
- Collect documents where the name and address match the profile exactly.
- Take clear photos of your permanent signboard; Google asks for signage evidence in some cases, such as two businesses at one address.
- Write a short, factual explanation of what your business is, where customers meet you and what you have corrected.
How do you appeal through Google's appeals tool?
Appeal from the appeals tool itself, using the account that manages the profile. These are the steps on Google's help page:
- Open the Google Business Profile appeals tool and select Confirm, or Switch account if needed.
- Select the Business Profile you want to appeal, then Continue.
- Select the decision you want to appeal, then Continue.
- Optionally upload supporting evidence with Choose file; you can attach multiple files.
- Use the text box to explain why the profile should be reinstated.
- Tick the box confirming you are ready and all evidence is attached, then select Submit appeal.
Google says it will email you the decision, and its appeals page states that appeal reviews and decisions can take up to 5 business days. If your account is restricted, first appeal on your Google Account restrictions page; once that is lifted, appeal the profile. If you manage more than 10 suspended locations, the tool offers a bulk option that takes a spreadsheet of Business Profile IDs.
If the appeal is denied, Google says it may be able to do an additional review, where you can add evidence that wasn't in your original appeal.
What should you NOT do while your profile is suspended?
Do not try to work around the suspension. Google's help pages warn against the shortcuts people often try.
| Don't | What Google's pages say |
|---|---|
| Create a new profile for the same business | "Do not create a new Business Profile for the same business." Google allows one profile per business. |
| Submit several appeals for the same issue | Do not submit multiple appeals for the same issue before receiving a decision. |
| Buy reviews or offer discounts for them | Paid and incentivised reviews are fake engagement and are removed. |
| Ask staff to collect a set number of reviews | Listed as not allowed for merchants. |
| Ask only happy customers for reviews | Selectively soliciting positive reviews is not allowed. |
| Switch to a virtual office address | A virtual office location isn't eligible for a Business Profile. |
Be wary of anyone who promises certain reinstatement for a fee. Only Google decides an appeal, and the official route is free.
How can you prevent a suspension, and why keep a website?
Keep the profile identical to your real-world business, and keep a website so customers can still find you if the profile goes down.
- Use the name on your signboard, with no city, service or slogan added.
- Show your address only if customers visit it; otherwise hide it and set a service area.
- Choose one specific primary category and only the extras that describe what the business is.
- Use a phone number the business controls and a website for that location.
- Ask every customer for a review the same way, without offers.
- Never create a second profile; to fix a mistaken duplicate you made, Google says you can remove it from your account without affecting your verified listing.
Our guide to optimising your Google Business Profile covers setup in more detail. A profile lives on Google's platform under Google's rules, so many shop owners also keep a business website of their own with the same name, address and phone. It can still appear in Google Search for your services and area, and it holds your contact form, WhatsApp button and service pages while an appeal is under review.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why was my Google Business Profile suspended?
Google says it may suspend or disable profiles that don't follow its guidelines. Common causes include extra keywords in the business name, a virtual office or P.O. box address, a visible address for a service-area business, duplicate profiles, keyword-style categories and fake or incentivised reviews. The appeals tool shows the reason and links to the policy Google says was violated.
How do I appeal a suspended Google Business Profile?
Open the official Google Business Profile appeals tool, sign in with the account that manages the profile, select the profile and the decision, attach optional evidence and explain why it should be reinstated. Tick the confirmation box and submit. Google says it will email you the decision, and that an appeal can be submitted only once.
What documents does Google accept as evidence?
Google lists official business registration, a business licence, tax certificates and utility bills for the business, such as electricity, phone, water or internet. The name and address on each document should match the profile. In India, documents of these types may include a GST certificate, a shop and establishment registration or a business electricity bill.
Should I create a new profile if mine is suspended?
No. Google's help pages say not to create a new Business Profile for the same business, and its guidelines allow only one profile per business and one page per location. A new profile for the same business goes against those guidelines. Fix the cause, then use the official appeals tool for the existing profile.
How long does a Google Business Profile appeal take?
Google's appeals page states that appeal reviews and decisions can take up to 5 business days, and that you should not submit multiple appeals for the same issue before receiving a decision. You can check progress in the appeals tool, where the status shows as Submitted, Approved, Not Approved, Can't be appealed or Eligible for appeal.
