Key takeaways

  • A hosted builder can be enough for a single doctor with one location who mainly needs timings, a map and a call button.
  • Multi-doctor and multi-branch practices across Delhi NCR usually outgrow builders because of routing, staff roles and content approval.
  • Check portability before you start: Wix says its sites must run on Wix's servers, while WordPress is open-source software you can move.
  • Ethics rules, DPDP duties and Google's trust signals apply equally to every platform; the platform does not make a site compliant.

Should a doctor in Delhi NCR use a website builder or a custom website?

A doctor with one clinic in Delhi NCR and simple needs can start on a website builder; a practice with several doctors, branches or system integrations is usually better served by a custom build. The deciding factor is how much the site has to do beyond showing information.

Delhi NCR practices often grow sideways: a second chamber in Gurgaon, a branch in Noida, visiting consultants on fixed days. A site that began as three pages soon has to show which doctor is where on which day, route enquiries to the right desk and keep everything accurate. That is where the choice of platform starts to matter.

A simple test helps. Write down every task the website must handle in its first year: updating timings, adding a doctor, answering appointment requests, publishing an article, opening a branch. If every task is a page edit, a builder will cope. If tasks involve several people, branches or systems, plan for something more structured from the start, because rebuilding later costs more effort than building right once.

What are the main ways to build a doctor's website?

There are four broad routes: a hosted builder, WordPress, an e-commerce platform, or a custom build. Each has a sensible place; none is right for every practice.

  • Hosted builders such as Wix: drag-and-drop pages, hosting included. Wix states that sites built on it must run on Wix's servers and cannot be exported to another host, though the content belongs to you.
  • Google Sites: simple pages made inside a Google account. You can connect a custom domain, with some limits such as third-party fonts not working on a custom domain.
  • WordPress: open-source software licensed under the GPL that you install on hosting of your choice, then shape with a theme and plugins, or have a developer build a custom theme.
  • E-commerce platforms such as Shopify: built for selling products online. They suit a pharmacy or product shop more than a consulting practice.
  • Custom build: designed and coded for your practice, with the content structure, forms and integrations you need.

Many doctors also hold profiles on online appointment and doctor-directory platforms. These are useful extra listings, but they are not your own website: you do not control the layout, the address patients remember or what appears next to your profile. Treat them as a complement to your site, not a replacement.

How do builders, WordPress and custom builds compare for a medical practice?

Builders win on speed of setup; custom builds win on structure, routing and control; WordPress sits in between. The table compares what matters to a practice.

FactorHosted builderWordPressCustom build
SetupFastest; templates readyModerate; theme and plugins to chooseLongest; designed for you
Moving laterWix sites cannot leave Wix's serversFiles and database can move hostsDepends on your contract; insist on owning the code

Ask for a demo of one task, such as changing a doctor's Saturday timings at two branches, on each option you consider. The time it takes tells you more than any feature list.

When is a website builder enough for a doctor?

A builder is enough when the site mainly needs to tell patients who you are, where you are, when you are open and how to call. If that describes your practice, spend the saved effort on your Google Business Profile.

  • One doctor, or two doctors with fixed shared timings.
  • One location, with no plan to add branches soon.
  • Bookings happen by phone or WhatsApp, not through an online system.
  • Five to eight pages cover everything: home, about the doctor, services, timings, location, contact, privacy.
  • Someone at the clinic is comfortable editing pages and checking forms.

Builder templates for clinics often include testimonial sliders, star-rating widgets and stock photos of smiling "patients". Remove them before launch; under the 2002 ethics regulations, testimonials and boasting of cures do not belong on a doctor's site.

When does a Delhi NCR practice need a custom website?

A practice needs a custom website when information changes often, lives in several places or has to reach other systems. Across Delhi NCR, branches and visiting consultants are the usual trigger.

  • Several branches: each with its own address, doctors, timings and WhatsApp number, as covered in our guide to clinic website design for Delhi NCR.
  • Doctor rotas: consultants who attend different branches on different days.
  • Integrations: enquiries flowing into an appointment system or a CRM for the front office rather than an email inbox.
  • Content approval: health articles that a named doctor must review before they go live.
  • Privacy controls: consent records, access by branch and deletion schedules for enquiries.
  • Performance: full control over page weight for patients on mobile data.

The effort behind a custom site is driven by the number of branches and doctors, the integrations, the languages and how much content has to be written and reviewed. Agree these up front with your developer, and make sure you will own the code, domain and hosting account.

What must any doctor's website get right, whichever platform you choose?

Compliance and trust depend on what you publish and how you handle data, not on the platform. A builder site and a custom site face the same rules. This is general information, not legal advice.

AreaWhat appliesWhat it means on the site
Medical ethicsThe 2002 ethics regulations, in force since the NMC held its 2023 regulations in abeyance on 23 August 2023No soliciting, no self-praise, no boasting of cures, registration number shown
Advertising claimsThe Drugs and Magic Remedies Act, 1954No false claims about drugs; no claims to treat diseases in its Schedule
Patient dataThe DPDP Act, 2023 and the DPDP Rules, 2025, notified 13 November 2025Plain-language notice, easy withdrawal of consent, security safeguards; core duties from 18 months after notification
Search trustGoogle's helpful content guidance on health topicsBylines, credentials and review dates on medical content

Check how each platform stores form submissions and who at the platform or plugin vendor can access them, because the Rules expect safeguards to cover processing done on your behalf.

How do you move from a builder to a custom site without losing patients from search?

Map every old page to its new address, set permanent redirects, and keep your Google Business Profile pointing at the right pages. Done carefully, patients and search engines follow you to the new site.

  1. List every URL on the current site, including doctor and service pages that get visits.
  2. Rebuild the content; with Wix, pages have to be recreated, because the site cannot be exported.
  3. Set server-side permanent redirects from old URLs to new ones. Google's site move guidance says to keep redirects as long as possible, generally at least a year.
  4. Submit the new sitemap in Search Console and fix internal links.
  5. Update the website and appointment links on every branch's Business Profile.
  6. Watch Search Console and enquiry numbers for the first weeks, and fix gaps quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Wix good enough for a doctor's website?

For a single doctor with one clinic and simple needs, Wix can work: you get templates, hosting and a contact form without coding. The main limitation to know is that Wix says its sites must run on Wix's servers, so moving later means rebuilding. Practices with several branches or integrations usually need more structure than a builder offers.

Can I use Google Sites for my clinic?

Google Sites can host a basic information site, and you can connect your own domain. It suits a very simple page with timings, a map and contact details. It offers limited design and form options, so most clinics that want appointment requests, doctor profiles and service pages choose WordPress or a custom build instead.

Is WordPress a builder or a custom website?

It can be either. WordPress is open-source software you install on hosting of your choice. With a ready-made theme it behaves much like a builder; a developer can also build a custom theme and features on it. You can move the files and database to another host, but you must keep the core, theme and plugins updated.

Does a custom website make my clinic compliant automatically?

No. Compliance comes from what you publish and how you handle data. Whatever the platform, follow the 2002 ethics regulations on advertising, avoid claims barred by the Drugs and Magic Remedies Act, and handle form data in line with the DPDP Act and Rules. A custom build just gives you more control over forms and access. This is not legal advice.

Will I lose my Google ranking if I switch from a builder?

Not if the move is planned. Map old URLs to new ones, set permanent server-side redirects and keep them for at least a year, as Google advises. Submit the new sitemap, fix internal links and update the website link on your Business Profile. Expect some movement for a few weeks while Google processes the change.
