Why Are School Buses Yellow in India? The Rule and the Reason

School buses in India are yellow because CBSE’s transport rules and the AIS-063 school bus standard ask for it. The colour was picked in 1939 because it stands out at a distance and black lettering on it is easy to read.

Key takeaways

  • CBSE’s Annexure IX says school buses must be painted a uniform colour, preferably yellow, with “School Bus” on the front and back and “On School Duty” on hired buses.
  • AIS-063, the automotive standard for school buses, says all school buses must have an external colour of Golden Yellow as per IS 5:1994.
  • The Supreme Court’s 1997 judgment asked for an inscription showing school duty; we found no colour requirement in it.
  • School bus yellow comes from a 1939 conference in New York; the US shade is Federal Standard 595a colour 13432, and Wikipedia gives its screen hex as #F5A500.

Why are school buses yellow in India?

School buses in India are yellow because CBSE’s transport rules ask for a uniform colour, preferably yellow, and the AIS-063 school bus standard specifies Golden Yellow. Yellow was chosen for school buses in 1939 because it is easy to spot at a distance and black lettering on it stays readable in poor light.

So there are two separate answers. The rule comes from Indian documents: the board’s affiliation conditions and a vehicle standard. The reason comes from road safety thinking in the United States, where school bus yellow was first standardised. This post covers both, plus the colour code and the lights. For the full list of what a school bus needs (driver, attendant, speed governor and so on), see our guide to school bus rules and regulations in India.

Is yellow colour compulsory for school buses in India?

For a CBSE school, yellow is the expected colour, and for a bus built as a school bus under AIS-063 it is specified. The exact wording differs by source, so a school should check each one that applies to it.

CBSE Circular No. 01/2012 added transport precautions to the affiliation bye-laws. Its Annexure IX says: “All the school buses must be painted with uniform colour preferably Yellow with the name of the school written prominently on both sides of the bus.” It also says “School Bus” must be written on the back and front, and a hired bus must clearly show “On School Duty”.

AIS-063, Requirements for School Buses, is published by ARAI for the committee set up under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules. Clause 3.1.1 says: “All school buses must have an external colour of ‘Golden Yellow’.” It covers buses with 13 or more passenger seats meant for carrying children to and from school.

The Supreme Court’s judgment of 16 December 1997 in M.C. Mehta v. Union of India is often quoted as the source of the yellow rule. We read it: it says buses “shall carry a suitable inscription to indicate that they are in the duty of an educational institution”, but it does not mention a colour.

State enforcement follows the same pattern. In Hisar, The Tribune reported in April 2024 that a police and transport drive found school vans that were not yellow, which it called mandatory for school vehicles.

Not legal advice. State boards and state transport rules can word this differently. Confirm with your RTO or District Transport Officer which rules your vehicles are inspected against.

Where did school bus yellow come from?

The colour was fixed at a national conference on school bus standards held at Teachers College, Columbia University, New York, in April 1939.

According to Wikipedia’s article on school bus yellow, the conference was led by Professor Frank W. Cyr. It set 44 national standards for American school buses, covering things like length, ceiling height and aisle width as well as body colour. Teachers College’s own article gives the same account.

The shade was first called “National School Bus Chrome” and is now known in the US and Canada as “National School Bus Glossy Yellow”. The US National Bureau of Standards listed it as Federal Standard No. 595a, colour 13432. Indian buses follow a different specification (IS 5 Golden Yellow), but the idea behind it is the same.

Why yellow and not another colour?

Yellow was chosen because it is conspicuous at a distance, easy to see at dawn and dusk, and black lettering on it is very legible, even in semi-darkness.

  • Seen from far away: Wikipedia records that the colour was picked as “conspicuous at a distance”, so other drivers notice the bus early.
  • Low light: school runs start early and some end late. Wikipedia’s school bus article says yellow was considered easiest to see at dawn and dusk.
  • Readable lettering: black letters on yellow are easy to read, which matters for “School Bus”, the school’s name and its phone number.
  • A signal on its own: the colour was unusual enough to become linked with children on a route, so drivers learn to slow down when they see it.

You will also read that yellow is picked up well by peripheral vision. That may be true, but we could not find it in the sources we checked, so we do not rely on it here.

The colour only works if it stays visible. Keep the body clean, repaint faded panels, and do not cover the lettering, insignia or rear marking with stickers or posters.

What is the school bus yellow colour code, paint code and hex code?

In India the paint specification is Golden Yellow as per IS 5:1994 (AIS-063). In the US it is Federal Standard 595a colour 13432. Wikipedia gives the screen hex for school bus yellow as #F5A500.

A hex code is a screen approximation, not a paint formula. When you order paint, give the painter the IS 5 shade name, not the hex. We have not listed an IS 5 shade number because we could not confirm it from the standard itself.

What do the flashing lights on a school bus mean?

In India, AIS-063 says that whenever the passenger door opens, a stop signal arm must swing out and the hazard warning lights must flash automatically. In North America, amber lights warn that the bus is about to stop and red lights mean it has stopped.

AIS-063 clause 3.5 sets out the two signals. The stop signal arm projects at least 150 mm from the co-driver side and carries a “STOP” sign with letters at least 40 mm high. The hazard warning works on its own, so the driver does not have to remember to switch it on. Clause 3.2.2 adds a flashing light or buzzer for the driver if an emergency door opens. CBSE’s list also asks for an alarm bell or siren for emergencies.

On North American school buses, amber lights come on before the stop, like a yellow traffic light, and red flashing lights with a stop arm show while children get on or off. In the US and Canada, traffic must stop for a stopped school bus with its red lights on. We did not find a similar rule for other traffic in India, so drivers here should simply slow down and watch for children near any stopped school bus.

What should a school check on its buses’ colour and markings?

Walk around every bus once a term with this checklist, and include hired buses and vans.

  1. Body painted in the fleet’s uniform yellow, with no faded or patched panels.
  2. School name readable on both sides.
  3. “School Bus” on the front and back, or “On School Duty” on a hired vehicle.
  4. School or contact phone number displayed where the public can see it.
  5. School bus insignia on the front and rear, not hidden by stickers.
  6. Hazard lights, the stop signal arm (where fitted) and the alarm bell working.
  7. Contracts with transport operators that say who repaints and re-letters the vehicles.

Markings help other drivers, but the boarding point matters too. Our school drop-off zone guide shows how to give buses their own bay at the gate.

How DVM Techno Can Help

DVM Techno is a software company with its team in Gurgaon, Haryana. A yellow bus is easy to see on the road; our SchoolTrack school bus tracking app makes it easy to see on a phone. Parents watch the bus live and get an arrival alert, children scan a QR code or RFID card as they board, and the driver has a one-tap SOS. SchoolTrack does not make a bus compliant with any rule above. Call +91-8448523313 for a demo.

Frequently Asked Questions

School bus yellow kyu hoti hai — why are school buses yellow?

School buses are yellow because the colour is easy to see from far away and at dawn and dusk, and black lettering on it is very legible. The shade was fixed for American school buses at a 1939 conference in New York. In India, CBSE’s transport rules ask for a uniform colour, preferably yellow, and the AIS-063 school bus standard specifies Golden Yellow.

Is yellow colour compulsory for school buses in India?

For CBSE schools, Annexure IX of the 2012 transport circular says buses must be painted a uniform colour, preferably yellow. AIS-063, the automotive standard for school buses with 13 or more seats, says the external colour must be Golden Yellow as per IS 5:1994. State rules can add to this, so confirm with your RTO which rules apply to your vehicles.

Did the Supreme Court order school buses to be painted yellow?

Not in the judgment we read. The Supreme Court’s order of 16 December 1997 in M.C. Mehta v. Union of India says school buses must carry a suitable inscription showing they are on the duty of an educational institution, but it does not mention a colour. The yellow requirement in India comes from CBSE’s transport precautions and the AIS-063 school bus standard.

What is the hex code of school bus yellow?

Wikipedia gives the hex code of school bus yellow as #F5A500, which is RGB 245, 165, 0. This is a screen colour for websites, apps and designs. It is not a paint formula. For painting an actual bus in India, use Golden Yellow as per IS 5:1994, the shade named in the AIS-063 school bus standard.

What is the paint code for school bus yellow?

In India, AIS-063 specifies Golden Yellow as per IS 5:1994, the Indian standard for paint colours, with an optional 150 mm Golden Brown band below the windows. In the United States, the shade is National School Bus Glossy Yellow, listed as Federal Standard 595a colour 13432. Give your painter the IS 5 shade name rather than a hex value.

Why do school buses have flashing lights?

Flashing lights warn other drivers that children are getting on or off. In India, AIS-063 says the hazard warning lights must switch on automatically and a stop signal arm must swing out whenever the passenger door opens. In North America, amber lights flash before the bus stops and red lights flash while it is stopped, and traffic must stop.

Does a hired bus or van used by a school also need to be yellow?

CBSE’s rules say all school buses should be a uniform colour, preferably yellow, and a hired bus must show “On School Duty” instead of “School Bus”. In Haryana, The Tribune reported in 2024 that a Hisar enforcement drive treated yellow as mandatory for school vans too. Write the colour and marking duties into every contract with a transport operator.
